Theory Lesson 1: The Staff

The Music Staff.

The set of five lines on which music is written is called a staff.

A note is a musical sound that can be written on any of the lines or in any of the spaces between the lines. When we say that a note is “on the line” we mean that a line goes through the middle of the note.

A staff is like a ladder. High notes are written near the top of the ladder and low notes are written near the bottom:

Each of the five lines and four spaces can be given a number:
